Ant, as for Beacon, its amazing, some people you could plant a goldmine in their backyard and they wouldn’t know it. Its great helping out others, being as I have little guys myself, its usually mom with her little guy that needs help with a flat or something, but that goes a long way. Pay it forward!

Rich, what age would be appropriate for this? I have a 6 novice and 8 rookie, and me, 37 Novice.

I did notice one good thing at the Nat. One of the NBL vans had “Bicycle Motocross Racing” spelled out on the back in big letters. Too many, no, almost everyone, thinks ‘kids’ when they hear or see ‘BMX’. Its a little thing, but at least to me spelling it out sounds alot better. But then again, what the hell do I know. Im a 38 year old who races BMX!!!

Thanks guys. The LBS came through. He had a new complete on the floor and actually took it apart and gave us that frame. I didn’t even ask him to do that! He called and found out it wasn’t coming in time, so he just did it. I stopped in last night and there it was all ready to go. Talk about Outrageous Customer Service. That guy has me as a customer for life! (shameless plug coming)…The store is Bike King on Rt 31 in Clinton, NJ. He actually has alot of small parts (BMX!) too. Stop in if you are in the area.

Bill, I think you are correct that it is because of the way the system is designed… I was talking with a Dad and his son last night and the dad was telling me their goal was to make novice class. He says some people just move them up, but they want to earn it. A noble cause, the problem is the way the system is set up with move up points and the like and there ends up not being a ‘beginner’ class. If a whole rookie class started today and they all rode about the same # of races, and they were all roughly competitive the system would work fine and they would all move up at around the same time. I think we all know the problem with this!

Tidey, before I had a dog, I would have said, its just a dog, but we now have a 3yr old standard poodle. Your dog is part of the family. You gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck, we are thinking about you.

Rodney, the problem is most (I don’t necessarily mean yours) shops don’t speak BMX, racing or freestyle. Sure, they have a few token BMX bikes for the kids, but pretty much they dont know and they dont care. (Then again, unless you are buying a complete, many shops don’t seem to want to be bothered with anything else either). I try to buy from a shop whenever I can, but sometimes its a whole lot cheaper AND better to just call or online shop someone who knows BMX. Wish it werent that way and I will continue to support local shops when I can. I want them to be there as much or more than the next guy.

I got one more thing to add. My son (8 yr old), just got his ‘move up points audit’ in the mail. Now, hes no rockstar, but out of 32 races that they have listed, he has 4 move up points. I havent gone over his races, and I didnt keep good records last year, but I know he has more than that. He was #2 in the state last year! They only have 2 state races listed, (we did 4 qualifiers, plus the championship). My point is their record keeping sucks, and if all these rookies are waiting for their ‘letter’….it aint coming for a long time!!!

Tidey, FWIW, not to rehash another thread, but I took my kids there last year and my 8yr old (7 at the time) raced and got smoked. It was pathetic, he hated that track until we went back at the end of the summer for the state championship where he did ok. But you know what? It was a learning experience for him. He certainly doesnt have the highest self esteem, and it was tough love at its finest. I felt bad for him. You know your situation, but I think it is a great experience for a kid, even if they do get smoked. My sons name is Colin. He will be on the bright orange Haro. Look us up if you are there. Your son sounds alot like mine.
