RE: The equipment rental it is no different then renting a snowboard and boots and hitting the jumps at a ski slope, or renting a Downhill/freeride MTB at a resort and going big….It is done all the time…I’m sure it is not an easy or cheap propostion but maybe the Sanctioning bodies can step up and help promote the sport..

    Pete,

You nailed the downside of racing at our age……..A lot to lose!!!! Wear your body armor….

I’m hoping to hit the practice track out here when things dry out and try a race or two in July.

You up for the Christmas Classic in Columbus this year??? Old school NJ road trip?

I’m trying to remeber my first race, 80 or 81 WWBMXA Action Park National 10 Beginner Class on my Fuji Orange Peel. Finished 3rd and could not wait to get out of the beginer class, mostly to lose the stigma of the beginner title…BITD didn’t you move up after you won a beginner race???

I like the idea of a 5 race max for the Rok class. 5 races or 2 wins and you move up. The equipment (clips) end does not bother me, there will always be people with more money then most that choose to spend it to look cool or in hopes of going faster. Plus you may have older Roks that have been riding MTB and are comfortable with slips. For the families that don’t have the money for clips and carbon forks it would be awesome to have a fleet of rental bikes and helmets to get them on the track. The Hyper spec bike thing seems like a great way to do that. You get your rental bikes and elimanate any equipment advantages

What shop would sponser a Beginner???

Body Armor optional but in wide spread usage…which is good for the big fragile types like myself..

Clipless on a MTB is one thing…not sure I trust myself with them on a BMX.

Fogot about the “it works”. Can’t believe I remember your butt..

    I rolled with I-B-C-N-U for awhile…

    True,

You can buy good complete bikes now for reasonable $’s…I’ve got a new Floval Flyer on my list to purchase this year.

Also New school in general items
Full face helmets, body armor, tracks with a zillion jumps, uniforms that all look a like and the fine art of the manual

but on the positive side, competitive racing in the old man classes…

    Wogs,

The wheels are no longer made of wood and they are the same size now, no more of that huge wheel up front and the little one out back. Makes them easier to get on….

Seems like the new bikes are lower, longer and use Canti brakes and seem to run their handlebars narrower. The 24s ride a lot like 20s. I raced an old school Cyclecraft 24″ a few years ago and it looked about 3 feet taller then the new school rides….still got the job done though. Oh yea, dare I mention the fact that a lot of guys are running clipless pedals….you must have some old school hardware kicking around still, dust it off and take it out.

Also as far as the “sponge MTB” goes, get yourself a rigid single speed. You’ll never go back to a full sus bike after that. I converted over this year and my sus bike has not left the garage.

Now there is an idea…….The Brett Spring show.

    1st show: The Braddock/Armory rivals
    Jimmy Gnecco vs. Joey Hufnagle
    Kenny Martin vs. Gibby Graner
    Craig Wilson vs. Pete Wog

We can race or put on those sumo wrestling suits and have at it!!!!

RE, Joe Kid, If you don’t have get it now!!!! I have two copies. One in perpetual play mode and the other making the rounds to all my friends, spreading the love…

Yea I bowed out in 85, after a back injury at Howell. One of my big regrets, I should have stayed with it but after getting hurt (for about the 100th time) I lost interest. And became interested in cars….Oh well that’s the way it goes! A lot og great memories though….

Do you have any updates of the guys you used to race with??

I do remember the you and Pete “throwing down” made for good local drama. That was one of the best parts of the Braddock days, rough and tough racing for all ages!! Wewo, totaly forgot about that dude….rode for Cliffside? or Clifton or something….You guys had a strong class.

I unfortunatly do not live in the Northeast anymore. I’m doing it up Midwest style these days. After school I took a job with Honda R+D out in Columbus Ohio. I’m a senior engineer and run the Suspension Handling Group and Driver Training. We had an indoor track a few years ago that made for good practicing/racing and we have a public practice track at one of the local parks (next to the skate park). It is a new style track that keep you busy….Columbus is also the home of the NBL Christmas Classic. I ran into Rob O’ down there years ago when he was still racing, great guy (still) I’m glad he has been able to make a living out of it. Yea, I’m proud of the fellow New Yorker……

Joey H and Jimmy Gneeco used to go at it if memory serves…..Yea it would be cool to have those moto sheets….Gibby, Gneeco, The Kings, Pete W____muth, etc….Great times.

I did a couple races on a 24″ a few years ago and it was a blast, I still ride the practice track out here a few times a month with my BMX and jump bike. I have done some MTB races also, nothing like BMX but still a good time..

I hope to have some more pics up in the not too distant future.

Keep me posted on the comeback

Funny, I was thinking the same thing….then you mentioned the rebel yell and it all came back!

No Gibby sightings, not sure what happened with him. Sounds like a job for Brett to find out!

    How are things?
