Finality. The State Series 2006 is done. Everyone rocked the house from the riders to the parents to the officials up to the volunteers. It was one amazing season. Personally I’ve never seen so many riders and parents keep so cool under the pressure. The riding this year wasn’t just stepped up, the attitudes and atmosphere at all the tracks has just gone through the roof! More than a few people popped in Friday night and stayed over for a good time riding that evening. The day of the race dawned with some mondo beyondo perfecto weather. CJBMX brought in a dunk tank for everyone to mess with, (the lines were intense!, lol), free food was on hand for the participants and chinese auctions and giveaways were the order of the day. CJ has been throwing quite a few race parties this year! The only bad part of the race was CJ’s main man, the voice of BMX reason in NJ, Vinnie Mannino’s inability to attend the race, prior commitments lead him to just be able to phone in and get updates. The CJ staff did him proud though and pulled off a twistedly wickedly radical Championship race!
First up the cool, heart warming stories of the race, yea us old guys get mushy on the “this makes me feel good about BMX” stuff. Layla Crager….seems Layla wasn’t even aware that she was qualified to race the Championship and left her bike and racing apparel at the homestead, woops! Janeen finds out, jumps on the mic asks if anyone can donate some stuff so Layla can race and kabammo, no sooner is the mic turned off then a LOAD of stuff is ready and waiting for the Cragermeister to use! That’s what it’s all about ladies and gents, competitors on the track, brothers and sisters off the track. Another story that should roll around out there, Rich Farside. Blasted into painland in Trumbull, he shows up at the Championship and rolls the gate, in pain, six times! (One time even doing a nose wheelie down the hill, SHOW OFF!) Then his last moto in cruiser, his competitor for the title all year, Nils Tribus, comes out of the gate, rolls to the side and tells Rich to cross the line first for the final lap. The sportsmanship shown there is just simply amazing, bravo to two men who showed everyone how BMX should be done.
Racing action, the micro midgets, the maniac mini’s. Who tore it up? These ladies and gents! Lenny Hicks did his track building dad proud by putting the 9 under cruiser and 8 novice class all behind him. 5 under rookies, the ant-class, spill em out of the gate and watch em go! Eletto and Bryson rocked…well… rolled around the track and finished 1-2 in the class, these young lads are looking pretty large for such little dudes! 7-8 Rookie was taken by Ryan, Yuhas so fast, with the above mentioned Nils Tribus’s son, Karsten in second! More young offspring of current killer riders in the 6 Rookie class were going full tilt bozo, Gabe Hatem, loved dem firsts and brough it home, Vliet and McMurray followed in for 2 and 3, the kids are having a great time and the parents were seen smiling chin to chin! 6 under novice? The Hamblin horror took it home for Team Hamblin! Rocking family with a true love for the sport! Might mouse super Krause brought home the deuce! 10 Expert was rolled over by the flying Filippone, Paul, doing it for his bro Luke who got broke off at the CJ qualifiers this past July! Young ladies? In deh house! Godino, gone to the finish line in first for 6-7 gals, Crankin Alana Carolan had the big win in 8-9 ladies. Farside and Oliverio had quite a battle in the first moto but it was Linda who got the win for the day with Taylor taking her class for the year.
Moving up in age, rage and speed! 12 novice..with one of 2 mains of the day! Smoking! Nicholas Jones had the cajones and put it down for first in the main and a nice 2-1-1 in the motos getting the state title, Crofton, Brown and Farro popped in for 2-3-4 in the main. It was killer seeing a full rack going for all the potatoes! 12 X was wailed on once again by Victory Behm, it was actually surprising to see Blazing Behm out front as the main minion of those long locks had cut them off right before the race! Even without the power of the pony tail he was still able to take apart class and cruiser! Steven “dang I’m good” Dulock pulled down the second in the 12x class. 13 Rookie saw Zack Dorsey take the class win, but Amanda Robbins was seen out front in the second moto, to keep the boys honest. Rock on young lady!
The teens and geriatrics, oh man what a bunch of track torquing talent! 16 novice was taken by Jeff Heath and Tim McMarthy, two men who moved up through the year from the rookie class, major props lads! It should also be mentioned that these guys are involved in Dirty Jersey BMX, their own website, keeping people updated on BMX in the Central Jersey area. Check the link in the weblink section of the site. More than just riders! 16-17 X was ripped on by Luke Yerkes, Kenny Meleta another Dirty Jersey kid took the second in the motos but first for his class, 17 novice. 18-21 Expert, Phil’s…I mean fast guys all over. The winner for the day? Jammin Jimmy Moore rolled in from TR with his hat turned sideways and let the win come in, fast Phil D took the 2 for the day but kept all the power in his pocket for the main at the Score at the Shore on Sunday! Old men on bikes…dangerous, lol! 35 over novice with an expert or two thrown in for good measure. Wailing Dale Meghan took home top honors in the main, keeping up the pride for 30-34 X, Crazy Craig Wilson was right behind him though for the second and another move up point! Klimecki and Rempkowski finished the top 4 but it was Craig and Loren who got the 1 and 2 for the class for the year. Older experts? Thomas McMurray all the way for the win in each moto! Rob Bennett did get a good laugh in during the first moto as Wogs and Maddoof Middaugh piled up in the last turn. How fast is Rich Farside? All he had to do was say hi to everyone at the gate and he got the skinny digit for 2007. Both classes were crazy this past year!
Quick word on the cruisers. Tom Martin FLEW in for the win in 16-17 cruiser..and I mean FLEW, crazy air over the doubles! 30-34 cruiser? Vliet was sweet and took the win but it was the other Chris, Worrell who got the uno for the yearo! 35-39 cruiser…must ….beat….Whiley! Well Whiley already got beat down several times earlier in the week at EHT so it was Craig Wilson coming across the line for first in the class but Whiley was…wiley like a coyote and got the plate for the 2006! Final up, 45-49 cruiser. This class is defined by the 2 men who race it. Rempkowski and Heath. Always racing each other all year long, and usually it’s the Heathinator who takes the win….well he did the same at the Championship but it was racing Rempkowski, master bike builder who took the State Title. A 1 and 2 for those guys next year but it should be two number ones for attitudes.!
Last class for me to call up..16 over open. The fastest of the fast. The stylemongers! Dan Smith saved energy in his class to take a big number 2 in the open. Massive Matt Kelty took the number one for the day though, coming all the way from the land of LeadSled, Delaware to take home some dinero!
After the race it was time to hand out the trophies and start the laughing and planning ….for ’07! A bar was set up for some bunnyhopping contests, the dunk tank was fully dunking and the food was flying. It was really cool to see everyone hanging around after the race and having a good time! The Asbury Park Press also stopped by to get some words and pictures, so look for that write up next week! BMX racing is on the way up in NJ, NOTHING will stop us all now. 2007 is the run up year to the Olympics. Get ready. B.S.net is. Stay tuned….
